How To Achieve GoalsSo you’ve heard the ‘gurus’, so-called experts, and trainers all say the same thing – “Goals, goals, goals – you gotta set goals! That’s the real key to success!”

Yeah. Right.

Here’s the truth: if setting goals were the key to success, then we’d all be successful like mad by now – but we aren’t.

The key to success isn’t in setting goals, but rather, in how to achieve goals! In this post, I’m going to share some practical steps you can take to achieve your goals and open the floodgates for your success.


Goal Setting – How To Achieve Goals

Setting goals is easy. We do it every New Years – we set goals to earn more money, to lose more weight, exercise more, spend more time with our kids, sponsor more people into our business, and the list goes on…

Setting goals is the easy part, but if we’re going to learn how to achieve goals, then we’re going to have to look a little deeper within ourselves. You see, typically whenever we set goals, we also reach for something positive. There’s always a reward whenever we reach our goals.

The problem with using rewards as motivation is it doesn’t really require anything of us.

Example: Let’s say you want to lose weight so that you can fit into a certain pair of jeans again. So you write down your goal and set a time limit on achieving that goal. Is fitting into a pair of jeans you haven’t worn in years really going to be strong enough motivation to lose the weight whenever Thanksgiving is coming up, Christmas is just around the corner, and there’s a big bar-b-que planned for your birthday?

Probably not. Why, you ask? Because at the end of the day, you’ve gone this long without losing weight and there’s just no sense of urgency. After all, aren’t you supposed to be okay with who you are? Shouldn’t people just like you for you and not your weight?

How To Achieve Goals: The Secret

Do you really want to know how to achieve goals? The secret is found in the motivation, or rather, the TYPE of motivation.

Example: We’ll use the same goal of losing weight, only this time, it’s not for a reward. This time, your doctor looks you square in the face and tells you with utmost concern, “You’ll be dead within 6 months if you don’t change your eating habits and shed at least 75 pounds“.

Whoa – it just got real.

So if you really want to learn how to achieve goals, then here’s the secret that the most successful entrepreneurs and business owners understand:

The fear of loss is always greater than the desire for gain.

Achieving GoalsSo, if you’re trying to lose weight and you’re going to get motivated to the max…if you’re going to overcome your exercise aversion…and if you’re going to reduce your chocolate intake by a pound or two a week, then you’ll have to use the fear of loss motivation tool.

In one of Tom “Big Al” Schreiter’s reports, he writes:

“For example, we are extremely motivated not to pay a speeding ticket. Maybe we’ll take a half-day off work, hire a lawyer, drive down to the county courthouse, and we’ll fight the judicial system to save the $100 fine.

Yet, we won’t spend an extra hour on the telephone prospecting for new distributors, even though that extra hour could earn us hundreds of extra dollars.”

How To Achieve Goals: Simple Steps

Step 1
Get emotionally involved. Nothing drives us like emotions. If your goals are shallow and never penetrate below the surface to your heart, then the chances of you achieving your goals are slim to none.

Step 2
Be passionate about your goals. Another way of saying it would be to set goals you can be passionate about. When you’re passionate about something, you’re willing to go through hell or high water to get what you want.

Step 3
Pick a penalty that you will receive if you don’t hit your goal. Here’s they key to this step: this penalty must create a terrific emotional pain in your life. If the penalty isn’t big enough or severe enough, then you won’t be motivated enough to reach your goal.

When thinking about how to achieve your goals, think back to the examples above concerning weight loss.

One goal was reward based (fitting into an old pair of jeans) while the other is penalty based (the doctor telling you that you will die within 6 months unless you lose the weight). Which one would motivate you more? Which one would drive you to the next level of success?

Remember, anyone can set goals – that’s the easy part. But you, a highly qualified leader, will actually know how to achieve goals and will actually be doing it. You’ll be the envy of your peers, business associates, friends, and non friends.
