What Is Personal Development

What is Personal Development

What is Personal DevelopmentThere’s a famous quote by Jim Rohn that says:

“Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune.”

So what is personal development and what does it have to do with you and your business or career? Contrary to what many believe, personal development can be broken down into 2 simple words: self-education.

In this post, I’m going to both expose some myths about personal development, but I’m also going to stress the importance of developing ‘you’ and continuing in self education in 3 very simple and easy steps.

EXPOSED! 2 Myths About Personal Development

Before I start receiving hate mail from folks, let me first make very clear that I’m not saying the idea behind personal development is a myth or that self education and trying to better ourselves is futile. Again, let me make this very clear – that is not what I’m saying.

But there are a couple of misconceptions when it comes to personal development that I believe need to be addressed.

Myth/Misconception #1: Self education and personal development is unnecessary.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Personal development allows us to learn from our mistakes and helps us to grow as individuals. It pushes us to achieve dreams and goals that we would have otherwise never thought possible and allows us to discover strengths and other things within ourselves that we never even knew existed.

Show me someone who has achieved the ultimate level of success in both business and in life and I’ll show you someone that has invested time in their own personal development.

Myth/Misconception #2: Personal development is the tell all, end all of our success.

While personal development is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle, it’s not the only piece. All of the self education and self investing and personal development won’t mean a hill of beans without this one key ingredient; It doesn’t matter how many goals we set, how positive we are, or how motivated we are if we don’t take what we learn and…apply it.

Revelation by itself will never change you. It’s only the application of that revelation that can change you and your circumstances.

Maximize Your Personal Development in 3 Easy Steps

Your mind is like a file cabinet. It stores files of information that is made up of your beliefs, desires, convictions, knowledge…basically the core files of who you are. You can’t pull a file out of a file cabinet if that file doesn’t exist. Have you ever looked at someone like Donald Trump and wondered why when he makes a decision that 99.9% of the time that decision leads to success? It’s because Donald Trump has success based files in his mind that he can pull from that contain the knowledge and information that will lead to success.

Below are 3 easy steps you can take to maximize your personal development with the correct files.

Personal DevelopmentStep 1: Stay away from the negative people that tell you “you can’t”. When you are first born, you are an empty vessel. But after you’re born something happens – you have parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, and the media influencing you, sharing their beliefs with you, and ultimately they mold you into the person you are today. In other words, there have been files deposited into the file cabinet of your mind by various influences in your life and it’s these files that shape your convictions, your beliefs, and ultimately whether you’re successful or not. If you’re not seeing the success or results you desire, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate who you’re allowing to speak into your life.

Step 2: Deposit new files and information into your mind. Making the choice to stay away from negative people is a great start, but if we’re going to maximize our personal development, we’re going to have to start replacing the trash files with positive and success based files. One of the ways we can do this is by reading or listening to audio books. The Bible is a good one to start with. Below is a short list that should get you started:

  • Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
  • Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
  • The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell
  • Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker

I would also recommend any audio mp3’s from folks such as Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, and John Maxwell. Become a student of the industry. If you’re focusing your personal development for network marketing, I would recommend following some industry leaders like Ray Higdon.

Step 3: Apply and reapply. Take action. Knowledge is useless without application. It won’t matter that you’ve read 46 books in 3 weeks, listened to 16 mp3’s,or ditched all the cancerous people in your life if you’re not taking what you’ve learned and apply it. I know I sound like a broken record but since this continues to be an ongoing issue in several home and network marketing businesses today, then I cannot stress the enough: Knowledge by itself will never change you. It’s only the application of that knowledge that changes you.

So the keys to maximizing your personal development are:

1. Stay away from negative people
2. Deposit new files into your mind
3. Apply and reapply
